    As I See It
    Marcie Wolf-Hubbard

    May 17 – July 2, 2023

    Artist in the House Gallery
    Locals Farm Market Restaurant
    19929 Fisher Ave. Poolesville, MD

Riverworks Art Center is pleased to announce the Artist in the House Gallery exhibit, As I See It featuring the work of Marcie Wolf-Hubbard. Marcie is the 2022 recipient of the Nancy Frankel Artist Award, and is a prolific artist and teacher whose work has been widely featured in exhibits and publications over the past several decades. In her current work she integrates her drawings in encaustic painting and mixed media to create unique surfaces, full of texture, and luminosity. Her imagery transcends narrative. Her vision involves close observation and abstraction of nature and people.

Riverworks Art Center produces Artist in the House Gallery Shows in collaboration with Locals Farm Market in historic Poolesville MD, in the heart of Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve. Artist in the House Gallery highlights regional artists from MD, DC, VA, WV, and PA. Riverworks was established in 2022 to provide a place for artists to come together to learn, to be inspired and to support each other, as well as space for the community to support and enjoy the visual and performing arts.

Weaving Words and Movement into Art Virtual Exhibition 2022

Arts for the Aging's Intergenerational workshop with JCA Interages and the Gorlitz Kensington Club in Rockville, MD. The four-week series was led by teaching artists Lauren Mazow Boyle, Sandra Roachford, and Marcie Wolf-Hubbard and explored creative movement, poetry, and visual art.

See a short video for a sneak peek of a virtual program with @Arts for the Aging. I collaborated with musician Chris Brown in a four week Creative Cafe series with The Kensington Club. Here is a compilation presented in a virtual exhibition.

  • #timetravel- from my journey series.

Wolf-Hubbard's colorful collages are about the feelings and memories attached to places she has been or to which she can imagine having gone. She mentally travels to distant locales and time travels to different eras. Each postcard in Wolf-Hubbard’s work becomes a piece of a story that might have been; colors flow from her imaginings to breach the borders of the Mediterranean Sea or to bridges, roads and canals. The blur of colors and images suggests the speed of travel and the evanescence of the tourist’s experience. Thus we are privileged to follow her into her personal time and space and to make it our own.

    BIO

Marcie Wolf-Hubbard received her B.A. from the University of Maryland in Studio Art and studied Fine Art and Illustration at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her paintings have been exhibited widely on the East Coast. She has illustrated for magazines and books and worked as a courtroom artist.
Marcie is an instructor at Glen Echo Park, Yellow Barn Studios, The Smithsonian, and has transitioned to teaching virtually from her studio.

"Students come together to focus on art in what feels like an art community--- bringing people out of isolation and getting together to make art. Working with my students has also fueled me in this time of sadness and uncertainty. The attention to art has lifted anxiety and inspired us all to continue creating."

    ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Drawing and painting is my connection to the world, my response, or appreciation. My intimate, quiet observing connects me with my subjects. What captivates me about encaustic painting is the surface. The painting is a play of light, with a surface you want to touch. Added texture, luminosity, and dimension all help in my construction or building of my artwork. I add, and take away, sometimes making the painting more of a sculptural form. The carving away is another form of drawing.

  • About my classes. Students say...

Please keep me on your email list for upcoming classes.

The class is awesome. Even though I have no background I’m getting out of it what I can and having more fun than I’ve had in ages. Thank you for this!

You are an excellent, inspiring, motivating, liberating teacher.

You've changed my life! and you have such a gentle and wonderful soul.

Marcie, I was quiet and didn’t produce a lot of art during your class, but I want you to know how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found watching you work a lesson in and of itself, as you talked through your thoughts, ideas, and choices as you played with a piece in terms of line, color, blending, focus—you gave me a whole world and vocabulary to think about. This was true of the way you responded to students’ work as well. Your ability to navigate Zoom was amazing! And your teaching style is truly a pleasure. Much appreciation

Marcie is a gifted artist and teacher - and an incredibly kind person! She worked in partnership with me - stepping in when I asked for help - and letting me do my own thing. I love her art which gives me great trust in her suggestions/guidance. She is a lovely person to spend time with on top of it all. I recommend her highly.

I have taken several classes with Marcie, and she would always start the class with instruction and an explanation of the supplies that she brought with her. Then she would leave us on our own to work while walking around the room and helping each person. This individual encouragement was great -- I always produced something new and loved what I was able to do at each class. She provided such a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere that I forgot the time. The other thing that I really enjoyed was all the material that Marcie had with her at each class. She explained many different techniques at each session so I was able to explore different things. Marcie made everyone comfortable in the classroom, so the interaction with the other students was very, very pleasant.

Marcie inspires me to create art. When you work with Marcie, you are working with someone who clearly loves creating art, is extremely skilled, and wants her students to share the same passion. An accomplished artist that can teach is a gift.
